New Haven, CT – The 19th Annual Women’s Studies Conference will be held April 16 and 17 at Southern Connecticut State University. This year, the conference will focus on “Women and Girls of Color: History, Heritage, Heterogeneity.”

The conference, which features nearly 30 panels over two days, will take a close look at women and girls of color, looking back at their achievements throughout history. It will be broken into five sessions with multiple panels for those in attendance to choose from.

New Haven, CT – In the wake of last month’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, the campus community of Southern Connecticut State University is rallying together to support the relief effort. As a part of this large-scale effort, the SCSU Music Department and honor-service society Zeta Delta Epsilon will present a benefit concert for Haitian relief as part of the campus commitment to “365 days of Haiti relief.”

The March 3 concert features student performers and Southern ensembles, including the Jazz Standards Ensemble, University Choir, Blues Ensemble and Latin Jazz Ensemble. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in Garner Recital Hall (Engleman C-112) and continue for several hours.
Members of the general public are invited to drop in at any time to make a donation and listen to the SCSU ensembles. Suggested donation is $5 for students and $10 for faculty, staff and general public. Refreshments and T-shirts will be available at the event as well. All proceeds from the event will be added to the campus fund for Haitian relief set up by The Office of Student Life.

The SCSU Haiti Relief Committee will continue to organize fundraisers on Southern’s campus to address the humanitarian needs of the country. Zeta Delta Epsilon strives to advance the spirit of service and fellowship and promote and recognize scholarship and service within the student body. The honor-service society is just one of many campus organizations working to provide aid to Haiti.

For more information about the Haiti Relief Committee, contact Aaron Washington at (203)392-5885. For more information about the March 3 concert, contact David Chevan in the Music Department at (203)392-6630.

The Yale University Art Gallery houses a significant and encyclopedic collection of art in several buildings on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Although it embraces all cultures and periods, the Gallery possesses especially renowned collections of early Italian painting, African sculpture, and modern art. Its holdings of American decorative and fine arts are amongst the best in existence.

History

The Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest university art museum in the western hemisphere. The Gallery was founded in 1832, when patriot-artist John Trumbull donated to Yale College more than 100 paintings of the American Revolution and designed the original Picture Gallery. This building, on Old Campus, was razed in 1901.

The Gallery’s main building was built in 1953 and was among the very first designed by Louis Kahn, who taught architecture at Yale. A complete renovation, which returned many spaces to Kahn’s original vision, was completed in December 2006 by Polshek Partnership Architects. The older Tuscan romanesque portion was built in 1928 and was designed by Egerton Swartwout. A 10-year renovation project is due to be complete in 2011.

Collection

The Gallery’s encyclopedic collections number more than 185,000 objects ranging in date from ancient times to the present day. The permanent collection includes:

African Art: over 1000 objects in wood, metal, ivory and ceramic

American Decorative Arts: about 18,000 objects in silver, glass, wood, porcelain, and textile with an emphasis on the colonial and early federal periods.

American Paintings and Sculpture: over 2,500 paintings, 500 sculptures, and 300 miniatures from before the mid-twentieth century including paintings by Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Church, Frederick Remington, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, George Bellows, John Singer Sargent, Arthur Dove, and Edward Hopper, and sculptures by Hezekiah Augur, Hiram Powers, Horatio Greenough, William Henry Rinehart, Chauncey Ives, Alexander Archipenko, and Alexander Calder.

Ancient Art: over 13,000 objects from the Near East, Egypt, Greece, Etruria, and Rome dating from the Neolithic to the early Byzantine.

Art of the Ancient Americas: Mayan and Olmec figurines, vessels and sculptures.

Asian Art

Coins and Medals

Early European Art

Modern and Contemporary Art

Prints, Drawings, and Photographs

In 2005, the museum announced that it had acquired 1,465 gelatin silver prints by the influential American landscape photographer Robert Adams. In 2009, the museum mounted an exhibition of its extensive collection of Picasso paintings and drawings, in collaboration with the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. For the first time, portions of the Yale University Library’s Gertrude Stein writing archives were displayed next to relevant drawings from Picasso.

NEW HAVEN, CT – Pacific Northwest songwriter and guitar virtuoso David Jacobs-Strain performs songs off of his forthcoming release Terraplane Angel at CT Folk’s First Fridays concert series at the First Presbyterian Church in New Haven on Friday, November 6th at 7:30 p.m. Shawn Taylor opens the show.

Born in New Haven and raised in Eugene, Oregon, David Jacobs-Strain has come a long way from his days slugging a bamboo gear cart with a tattered “Delta Blues” sign through the Oregon Country Fair mud at the age of 13. For the next twelve years, he toured clubs and festivals nationwide, crisscrossing the Sierra-Nevada and Siskiyou mountains and navigating urban jungles of the East before landing in Nashville this year to cut a world-class recording of powerful original songs at the legendary studio of Ray Kennedy.

Years of solo shows formed Jacobs-Strain into a performer of rare strength and virtuosity. His outrageous guitar work jumps from wild fingerstyle to slide and percussive drive with a depth and fluidity that produces enough tone to rival any jam band. And his voice carries an emotional intensity that his songs demand.

Folks say that David Jacobs-Strain writes songs about the Pacific Northwest the way Lucinda Williams writes about the South or Tom Petty captures Southern California. The songs about love and loss, joy and outlaws, are set amidst the landscape of the old mining towns and old-growth clearcuts where counterculture kingpins reign.

Jacobs-Strain’s ability to capture emotional intensity in a deeply personal way has made him a mainstay on the national festival circuit. And his guitar style, both thundering and shimmering, has landed him onstage alongside performers like Taj Mahal and Bob Weir.
As an outdoor theater, Shakespeare in the Park faces risk—of the weather, bugs, and airplanes passing by. But Shakespeare in the Park embraces risk: its adaptations of classic plays include moments of modernization that speak to the audience—literally: the characters wink occasional references to outdoor theater. After all, not much separates them from the audience other than the stage. Shakespeare in the Park’s theater, like its adaptations, has no boundaries.

In the past, New Haven’s Elm Shakespeare Company has performed at least one non-traditional Shakespeare adaptation as well as a second stage production in its annual Shakespeare in the Park. This year the Company goes beyond tradition by not performing any Shakespeare. Instead, the Company presents, respectively, “Holiday” by Philip Barry and “The Imaginary Invalid” by Moliere. This weekend “The Imaginary Invalid” takes the stage (“Holiday” opened the theater last weekend). After each production debuts in its own weekend, Shakespeare in the Park will alternate the two plays through the beginning of September.

That it was opening night of the Company’s conception of “The Imaginary Invalid” only added risk as I stretched my legs out in Edgerton Park last night. But the Elm Shakespeare Company, of course, welcomed that risk. In fact, Shakespeare in the Park’s outdoor theater proved perfect for the Elm Shakespeare Company: the actors’ energy would’ve been too big for a closed theater. At times their energy was even bigger than Edgerton Park. For yet another year, Shakespeare in the Park proves to be a risk worth taking.

(Occasionally I did hear crickets, but at Shakespeare in the Park, that’s a good thing.)

Elm Shakespeare Company’s website provides a complete schedule of this year’s Shakespeare in the Park. Admission is a suggested donation.
