The Wadsworth Atheneum Goes to the Big Easy!

, CT - The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art takes a trip to the Big Easy this month by celebrating all things New Orleans. Join us at the museum on May 6 from 5 to 8 pm to let the good times role and get some joie de vivre back in your life!

This month’s Phoenix Art After Hours is inspired by the new exhibition High Water Marks: Art & Renewal After Katrina presented by the Amistad Center for Art & Culture. The show examines how the arts continue to be an agent of rebirth and renewal in the reconstruction of the city of New Orleans.

Get the night rolling with an eclectic mix of deep rhythm and sound from the Congo Square Ramblers featuring Hartford native Richard McGhee who believes that jazz is “the only original American art form, a true synthesis of the American Experience,” while sipping a free glass of Hurricane Punch courtesy of Hartford Distributors, Inc. And don’t forget to enjoy some spicy Creole cuisine from Rajun’ Cajun, délicieux home cooking straight out of the South.

If the night is rolling just a bit too fast for you, take an artsy break and join exhibition artist and Louisiana native Donald Boudreaux in a short gallery talk and colorful community art project. The project is not just a one night stand; it will live on beyond Phoenix Art After Hours and will become a permanent part of the exhibition’s installation. Don’t leave the Big Easy yet – stay until 8:00 pm for the action crime film, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans. Set in the post-Katrina New Orleans, this film features Nicolas Cage as the controversial detective who investigates the mysterious murders of five Seneglaese immigrants (2009).

Phoenix Art After Hours takes place the first Thursday of every month. Sponsored by The Phoenix Companies, Inc., First Thursdays at the Wadsworth Atheneum offer a wide variety of programming – art, live music, cocktails, gallery talks, and films – in addition to reduced museum admission starting at 5 pm. This event is free for Phoenix employees and all Museum members and $5 for non-members.

The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is located at 600 Main St. in Hartford, Connecticut. The Museum is open Wednesdays to Fridays, 11 am to 5 pm and Saturdays and Sundays, 10 am to 5 pm. For more information, please visit www.wadsworthatheneum.org.
