A Celebration of the Sea
Mystic, CT - Mystic Seaport will host Revels Repertory Company, a touring ensemble from Watertown, MA, who will perform the original production “A Celebration of the Sea,” at the Mystic Art Cinema in Olde Mistick Village Saturday, May 15, from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
The production features 35 performers who tell the story of whalers and their families in the mid-19th century. The songs, singing games, ballads, chanteys, dances and stories describe the fitting out of a sailor’s trunk, a farewell to family and friends, shipboard work and entertainment, a whale hunt, a storm at sea, the homeward voyage and a celebration of the seamen’s safe return.
“A Celebration of the Sea” is appropriate for adults and children ages six and up and includes many opportunities for audience participation. Revels Director Kay Dunlap will share with attendees how the production ties in with the restoration of the last wooden whaleship in the world, the Charles W. Morgan, which is currently ongoing at Mystic Seaport.
