Middlebury, CT – Quassy Amusement Park opens for its 102nd season of operation April 24 & 25 with a $30 carload weekend to benefit the Greater Waterbury Campership Fund.

Highlights of the weekend will include the introduction of the park’s new family drop tower “Free Fall ‘N,’” meet and greet sessions with Mama and Papa bear of “The Berenstain Bears,” ® an egg hunt for prizes, magic shows and free cheese sampling.

Both days will feature a $30 carload special, entitling up to 10 persons in a vehicle to ride from noon to 6 p.m. For each additional person in a vehicle, $5 will be charged. A portion of the carload proceeds will benefit the Campership Fund, which helps to send underprivileged children to camp.

Guests not wishing to ride will be charged $5 for parking on Campership weekend. Individual ride tickets and wristbands will be available at Quassy, which is located on Route 64 here.

“We’re excited about 2010 for a number of reasons,” said Quassy co-owner George Frantzis II. “We have the new drop tower ride for our guests, our large pavilion has been renovated for catered group functions, and the park’s summer entertainment schedule is fantastic.”

At 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25, Quassy will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt with a variety of prizes for children.

Mama and papa bear of the “The Berenstain Bears,” will meet and greet guests starting at 1:30 p.m. both days.

The Untied Way 0f Greater Waterbury, together with the Camp Bureau at the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper, administers the Campership program which enables approximately 500 children to attend summer camp each year. United Way staff administers the application process, eligibility determination, placement of children in camps, and payment to camps.

Children are awarded camperships based on location and family finances. Those eligible must reside in Waterbury, Cheshire, Bethlehem, Middlebury, Woodbury, Southbury, Thomaston, Prospect, Watertown or Wolcott. Financial eligibility is based on national poverty guidelines with income, federal assistance and family size all taken into account.

“In continuing with Quassy’s philanthropic beliefs, the Campership Fund has been a longtime favorite of the Quassy family,” said Frantzis. “Giving joy and happiness to children has been our driving force not only in business but in charitable events.”

Quassy’s has donated more than $100,000 to the Campership Fund over the years.

The Campership Fund weekend is also supported by Waterbury radio station WATR 1320-AM.

Free comedy magic shows by Jim Sisti and Sandy will also be a highlight of the weekend.

Quassy will host another Campership fundraiser over Labor Day weekend.
