Celebrate drawing with Draw On! at the Florence Griswold Museum in from March 27 through April 3.

Whether you doodle, scribble, or sketch, the art of drawing is about expressing thoughts and feelings in line and shade. Draw On! is a weeklong community festival that brings together people of all ages through the simple act of drawing. The objective of Draw On! @ F.G.M., March 27 through April 3, is to inspire people of all ages and abilities to just start drawing. The program is free with Museum admission.

Draw On! is a project introduced in 2006 by The Aldrich Contemporary Museum in Ridgefield. This year attendance is expected to reach 4,000, with participating organizations to date in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey.

The Florence Griswold Museum has created a dynamic drawing studio in the Hartman Education Center as part of this innovative project. During the Draw On! @ F.G.M. celebration, visitors can explore the world of drawing through a series of “creation stations” that offer drawing instruction and encourage experimentation with a variety of materials, techniques, and styles. Activities include free-style experimenting as well as more classic drawing lab experiments that challenge hand-eye coordination. Those interested in drawing from nature can step outside to explore the grounds of the historic Lyme Art Colony and try out methods of direct observational drawing. Several activities such as drawing in sand and displacing lines in woven netting relate to the avant-garde teaching of Sewell Sillman whose art is the focus of the current exhibition Sewell Sillman: Pushing Limits. “It’s all about creativity,” states Museum Educator Matthew Ferrer, a recent graduate of the School for the Visual Arts in New York City and the Museum’s Draw On! project manager. “All creative ideas, drawing style, and artistic approaches are welcome!”

The Florence Griswold Museum is located at 96 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, CT, exit 70 off I-95 and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 1 to 5pm. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 students, and free to children 12 and under.
