Clay Burkhalter kicks off Adventure Series on Sept. 24th

Mystic, CT -  Local sailor Clay Burkhalter, who successfully completed the Bermuda One-Two Race this past June, will kick-off the 2009-2010 Adventure Series at Mystic Seaport with a special prologue presentation Thursday, September 24.

Burkhalter, a resident of Stonington, CT, will discuss the tumultuous weather and challenges he overcame while racing his 21-foot Acadia sailboat to successfully win the trophy for first in his class. He will present at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the River Room at Seamen’s Inne.

Tickets for the prologue presentation are sold separately from the Adventure Series and are $14 ($12 for members) for the afternoon program and $15 ($13 for members) for the evening program. Students can purchase tickets at the discounted rate of $5. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mysticseaport.org/clayburkhalter or by calling (860) 572-5339.

The 2009-2010 Adventure Series officially begins in October and runs once a month through April. Featured topics and presenters include:

Thursday, October 15: The Great Capes – Beth Leonard will discuss her 10-year circumnavigation with Evans Starzinger aboard their 47-foot sloop through the Southern Ocean, a journey in which they endured storm-force winds, dangerous seas, freezing temperatures and broken equipment to pass under the three great capes.

Thursday, November 19: Riding America’s Longest Bike Route – Erik Schlimmer, the only person to have ridden the 2,740-mile Western States Mountain Bike Route from the top of the United States to the border of Mexico, will share his adventure through grizzly-inhabited woodlands and elevations exceeding 11,000 feet.

Tuesday, December 15: Swimming with the Piranhas at Feeding Time – Award-winning nature writer Richard Conniff will reveal his experiences with some of the world’s most exotic species of animals including a sit-down with African wild dogs and diving into piranha-infested waters.

Thursday, January 21: Alaska, My Home – Professional storyteller, writer and teacher Jack Dalton was born in Bethel, AK, in 1972 and five days later was flown to Anchorage to his adoptive family. Years later, Dalton revisited his birthplace to find his birth mother and soon discovered what he was meant to be—a storyteller. Dalton will share how he has carried on his grandfather’s tradition of storytelling, passing on stories from one generation to the next and thereby teaching valuable lessons and cultural details about the Yup’ik culture.

Thursday, February 18: On Thin Ice – Thom Pollard discusses his scientific expedition to the Himalayan Mountains in which he documented the rapid retreat of the Gangotri Glacier. Pollard will show never-before-seen clips of his trek in India to the holy Ganges River where he encountered yogis, mystics and religious pilgrims.

Thursday, March 18: If You’re Ever in the Amazon… – Blue-water sailors Bob and Ami Green will share their sea voyage aboard Scallywag II, a journey that took them through the seldom-traveled locales of Cape Verde, Senegal, Brazil and down the Amazon River.

Thursday, April 15: Racing Around the World, Non-Stop and Alone – Rich Wilson will speak about his recent 28,000-mile race around the world, which he completed non-stop and alone aboard his 60’ sailboat. While fewer than half of the international race’s participants completed the event, Wilson – the race’s senior skipper at the age of 58 – finished in 9th place.

Each presenter will speak at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the River Room at Seamen’s Inne. Tickets for the entire afternoon series are $85 ($70 for members) and for the complete evening series are $95 ($80 for members). Single-program tickets can be purchased after October 2 based on availability. Early registration is recommended, especially for the evening series. To purchase tickets, visit www.mysticseaport.org or call (860) 572-5339.

We understand that the Seaman’s Inn is not available for the Adventure Series.

Can you tell us where it will be held?
