MYSTIC, CT -  J. Susan Cole Stone, drawing instructor from the Mystic Arts Center, will teach Anatomy of the Boat, a two-day intensive drawing workshop hosted outdoors at Mystic Seaport Saturday and Sunday, October 3 – 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Scheduled rain date is Saturday, October 17.

Students will learn to create accurate drawings directly from observation of the Museum’s selection of historic watercraft which includes dories, the catboat Breck Marshall, the fishing schooner L.A. Dunton and the last surviving wooden whaleship in the world, the Charles W. Morgan. The Morgan is currently out of the water for restoration work, offering artists the perfect opportunity to capture the beauty and magnitude of the vessel’s hull.

Stone will instruct students on how to render boats in the third dimension, how to make vessels sit perfectly in the water and how to draw rigging, sails and all the lines of a boat through the use of perspective, line, value, form and texture.

Workshop fee is $140 ($115 for Mystic Seaport and Mystic Arts Center members) and includes admission to the Museum. Registration is required by October 2. To register, contact the Mystic Arts Center at 860.536.7601, ext. 209, or email education@mysticarts.org.

Some drawing experience is preferred for this class. Classes will break for a one-hour lunch each day. Participants are responsible for providing their own art supplies; a list of required supplies can be found online at www.mysticarts.org.
