Bozrah Farmers Market

New Farmers Market in Bozrah, CT. In addition to weekly vendors we will also have 4 theme days throughout the season. Theme days include July 3rd Colonial Day and kick off weekend, August 7th Dairy Day, September 11th “Peace”of pie day and October 2nd Fall Fiber Festival. All theme days will have special activities and guests and most will have costumed friends to take pictures with the kids. We will have special guests in addition to our regular vendors each week.
NALC Branch 147 Holding Letter Writing Campaign to Benefit MDA

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 147 is holding its 3rd annual letter writing campaign to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) from now until August 31, 2009. Members of the NALC Branch 147 will be dropping off letters to all local residents and companies to ask them to support MDA’s annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. Bill Maass, from Forms Tech Inc., generously donated the mailing list that is being used by the NALC to recruit support for the event. At the Telethon on Labor Day Weekend, members of the NALC Branch 147 will present a check to MDA with the amount of money raised through this letter writing campaign. The NALC Branch 147 has set a goal to raise at least ,000 for the fight against neuromuscular disease.

Sprague’s 3-Village Fall Festival

The Sprague Recreation Committee will be sponsoring the 3-Village Fall Festival on August 29, 2009. The festival will open up at 1000 A.M. and runs until 6:00 P.M. The festival will be held at the softball field, Babe Blanchette Field at the intersection of Route 97 and River Road, Sprague, right next to the Cumberland Farms store. The Recreation Committee wants to invite everyone to come to the event with your friends & family members. At the event, back by popular demand will be the rock wall for climbing, the Dunk Tank which we are looking for anyone who would like to volunteer to be the “dunked”. This year’s Festival will also bring back the bike race for the youths in town, which will be run on River Road. There will be children’s tattooing, Apple pie eating contest, and the Little Miss and this year, also Little Mr. Sprague. At the event, we will have a DJ who will not only play music all day long, he will also announce the upcoming events so that anyone interested in participating in an event, can do so. PLEASE remember that every child will need a parent or legal guardian who will fill out & sign any paper work, releases that need to be signed off. The event will also have food & beverage vendors as well as the area’s Pampered Chef representative. 2009 Corn Maze Adventure

The 2009 Corn Maze Adventure sponsored by Connecticut’s own The Farmer’s Cow challenges visitors to find their way through the maze shaped like a cow and her calf. Special nighttime flashlight maze trips on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Westport Firefighters to fill-the-boot for MDA

The Westport Fire Department Local 1081 will be doing more than fighting fires on Saturday, August 29, 2009. The local firefighters will be joining in on the fight against neuromuscular disease and filling-the-boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Westport firefighters will be collecting donations from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Compo Beach on Compo Beach Road in Westport, Conn. This is the first time in six years that the Westport Fire Department will be volunteering it’s time to fill-the-boot for MDA. They have set a goal to raise ,000. All of the proceeds raised during the fill-the-boot drive will go towards MDA’s services, research programs, and support groups, including MDA’s Summer Camp program for children affected by neuromuscular disease.

Birds of the Outback

Our feathered friends from down under are back to summer at Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration. “Birds of the Outback,” the only exhibit of its kind in New England, returns on May 2. The enclosed 1,200-square-foot aviary houses hundreds of colorful cockatiels, parakeets and rosellas, all native to Australia. With the exhibit entry fee (plus aquarium admission), guests receive a millet seed stick for feeding the birds. Once inside the exhibit, where the friendly birds sing and fly freely, simply hold the stick in the air and watch them swoop down to perch on your arm and eat right out of your hands! Guests will also learn about the birds’ habitat and behaviors, as well as the issues and challenges currently facing birds in the wild. Cost is plus aquarium admission per person.

Love Fest 2009

Yahweh! Productions presents the 4th Annual Love Fest Concert on the New Haven Green on Saturday August 29th, 2009 from noon until 7:30 PM. Come a join us in this music and arts celebration of love, life and hope for a community in need. In these critical times of economic crisis and job loss, national and local artists will be sharing our gifts and talents by joining together with local charities to bring love and support to our brothers and sisters who are hurting. There will be tents with boxes for donations of non-perishable items that will go directly to the Bethany Hands food pantry. Performers throughout the day will be local favorites, Boogie Chillun, Organic Soul and the Sandoval Band playing tributes to Michael Jackson as well as dynamic dance troupes and a world class Martial Arts demonstration. On a National scale, Vanilla Fudge featuring lead guitarist Vince Martell will be playing tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin starting at 5:30 PM followed by Hollywood actor Frank Minucci, “Tony T” from Carlito’s Way giving his life story from drugs and violence to a successful acting career. Come out and support this wonderful day of love, life and hope for a community in need.
Observe the Living Traditions of Indian New England: Village Interpreter Program

For the fifth consecutive year, IAIS will present its Village Interpreter Program. Members from a variety of Eastern Woodland Tribes staff our outdoor village and offer visitors a better understanding of the history, culture and social values of the Algonkian and Iroquois Peoples. The Native interpreters of Abenaki, Mi’Kmaq, Shinnecock, Mohawk and Cree descent will demonstrate traditional activities and lifeways skills as well as be available to answer questions concerning history, culture and contemporary Native American issues. Big Splash Water Play Day

SPLASH INTO SCIENCE as the Connecticut Science Center celebrates the opening of its KidSpace exhibit gallery with a Science Center-wide Water Play Day just in time to cool off. Water rockets will zoom through the air, expert bubble-blowers will reveal the secret to creating the perfect bubble, water streams will spray colored balls into a giant water vortex, and visitors will experiment with fountains and LEGO-brick dams to test their hydro-engineering skills as they make waves at the Science Center. A day of water play fun has been created for the whole family! All activities are free with general admission. Activities throughout the Science Center include: 1. Water Play in KidSpace: Explore the six different water play exhibits located within KidSpace. a. Build a dam out of LEGOs and try to block or control the water flow b. Explore the physics of water flow in the 1000 square foot water play area c. Toss bright colored balls into the giant water vortex and more. 2. Bubble Science: Investigate the science behind how and why bubbles are made in this interactive LIVE science demonstration. When is the last time you discussed bubble density? (located on the Science Center’s Rooftop Garden) 3. Water Rockets: Investigate the best water/air ratio needed to shoot water rockets up into the air. What better way to cool off than allowing the fuel (water) to refresh participants? (located on the 4th floor outdoor terrace) 4. Blanket Collection

The “Blanket Norwich With Love” collection continues every Saturday through August from noon – 4 PM. The goal of the museum is to collect 350 new and gently used, clean blankets, quilts, and sleeping bags for distribution to the shelters of Norwich, CT. So far we have collected 20 blankets and need a lot of help to reach our goal. Fall and winter will soon be here. No one should be cold. .
