This Weekend: Embrace the cold and enjoy the arts

| February 6, 2009 | 0 Comments

This weekend embrace the cold and head down to the New Haven Green, where sculptors will be transforming 300 pounds of block ice into temporary works of art.  You can catch the sculptors in action Saturday, February 7th and 14th from 10am to 12noon. During the ice carving, spectators will be able to make Valentines Day cards at the Shubert Theater, which will have hot cocoa and coffee available. In addition, the Shubert will be hosting a free screening at 1pm of “Happy Feet” on February 7 and “Lady and the Tramp” on February 14. Each of these events is family-friendly, free and open to the public.

From there, you can bring the kids down to the Stamford Museum & Nature Center where they’ll be making their own snow as a part of their “Let It Snow! Weekends“. Step inside to visit the museum, go sledding with the kids, have an old-fashioned snow ball fight, build a snowman, or enjoy some hot cocoa.

Those living in the Waterbury area can check out the DEP’s Winter Festival this Saturday at Black Rock State Park in Watertown, CT from 10am to 3pm. There will be full range of winter outdoor activities for the whole family including ice fishing, snowshoeing, map and compass, tracking, ice safety rescue demonstrations, visits from CT Canine Search and Rescue and The CT Horse Council – Volunteer Horse Patrol, and a bonfire complete with a marshmallow roast and storytelling. A concession stand will be available for food and beverage purchases.  Admission is free!
